Rooted in nature

For over one hundred years, natural, renewable raw materials have been at the heart of what we do. Here at Kräuter Mix, sustainability shapes the way we do business, with respect for what nature gives us deeply rooted in our actions. Our long-term success goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship, responsible natural resource use and social responsibility.

Since introducing GACP management in the early 2000s, Kräuter Mix has embedded resource efficiency and sustainability programs into both its strategic and operational core. We have a dedicated sustainability management team to uphold our commitment in this area, as well as an environmental management system that has been in place for many years.

Kräuter Mix’s sustainability mission statement sets out the framework for responsible action – both within the company and along our value chain – and comprises six key points:

  • Sustainable raw material procurement and partnerships

Procurement at Kräuter Mix is grounded in long-term relationships with our suppliers – both at home and abroad. Our partners, most of which are family run, include a wide variety of organizational structures, and we pride ourselves on building relationships that endure across generations of ownership.

  • Green processing

As part of our Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) environmental management system, we implement energy-efficient processes, ongoing resource use monitoring and measures for waste prevention and material efficiency. Insofar as possible, we reuse and further process any plant-based byproducts generated, while any unavoidable residual materials are recycled or disposed of properly.

  • Sustainable packaging

With our consistent focus on product safety and environmental stewardship, we are gradually switching our packaging materials to more recyclable options.

  • Cutting greenhouse gas emissions

We take all relevant greenhouse gas emissions into account – on site and along the value chain – and derive measures to gradually reduce the emissions recorded. Since 2015, we have sourced electricity exclusively from renewable energy sources.

When it comes to our suppliers, partnerships anchored in trust and transparency lay the foundation for social responsibility and environmental protection along the entire value chain. We have established a structured risk management system to address sustainability-related risks in our supply chains and support our suppliers through training, joint projects and regular visits.

  • Transparency and engagement

We report regularly and openly on our goals, action points and progress. We have published an annual EMAS-based environmental statement since 2015 as part of our environmental management system. Since 2026, we have combined this statement with additional sustainability aspects to ensure even more comprehensive reporting.

Certified organic products play a key role in our sustainability efforts. Kräuter Mix has offered organic products since 1985 and has been a certified organic producer since 1992. Furthermore, our environmental management has been certified since 2015 according to EMAS, the European Union’s most stringent environmental management system.

At Kräuter Mix, sustainability does not end at the company gate. Experts from our procurement and sustainability management teams support our suppliers in realizing sustainable procurement and quality standards, ensuring these guidelines constantly evolve and improve.

Our 480 or so employees play a vital role in the company’s long-term success. Kräuter Mix is a major employer and training provider in the region and is committed to fair working conditions, employee development and a respectful work environment. SMETA social audits regularly verify our compliance with social standards.

Kräuter Mix also maintains an active commitment to philanthropy and sponsorship, including supporting Mix for Kids and the soccer club TSV Abtswind.

What is the difference between EMAS and ISO 14001?

EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) and ISO 14001 are both important environmental management systems that help companies manage their environmental impact. While ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized system for structured environmental management, the EU-based environmental management system EMAS goes one step further, requiring companies to, among other things, engage in environmental reporting and continuously improve their environmental performance. It also mandates both employee involvement and external validation. ISO 14001 is embedded within EMAS and serves as the foundation of its environmental management system. As such, companies certified under EMAS also hold ISO 14001 certification.
